Arriving and Belonging, St. Albans Museum
The local Jewish community in St. Albans welcomed visitors into their lives, by telling some of their stories through personal objects and family photographs.
Arriving and Belong a temporary exhibition at St. Albans Museum, February to May 2022.
We worked with the St. Albans Jewish community community members with roots from around the world to bring their stories and experiences to life. Through the display of objects, specially commissioned photography, an audio scape, a timeline and a map plotting world wide roots.
Objects stood on specially made cardboard boxes, text appeared as applied labels, inspired by the storage of personal possessions and memories, and the act of opening up and sharing.
The exhibition includes some moving and powerful stories of displacement and migration, including a postcard in Yiddish, descriptions of exile in Iraq, Kinder transport photograph and ID card.
We conceived of and art-directed a photography project which captured each of the participants in the exhibition standing at their front door, holding an object that reflected their story.
